Elise Spares
A specialist e-commerce site for Lotus Elise car parts and accessories
The challenge
Elise Spares is one of the UK’s leading online Lotus parts stores, carrying one of the widest ranges of reconditioned Lotus parts in the country alongside new components for all Lotus models. It’s a niche market with a dedicated and knowledgeable customer base — buyers who know exactly what they need and expect the site to help them find it quickly and confidently.
The previous site had three fundamental problems:
Product discovery was painful. With hundreds of parts covering every Lotus model — from Elise and Exige to Esprit, Europa, and beyond — the old site had no effective way to navigate the catalogue. Customers couldn’t filter by model, year, or component category. Finding a specific part meant scrolling through endless lists or relying on the site search, which was unreliable.
Trust was lacking at checkout. Buying specialist car parts online requires confidence. The old checkout process felt dated and uncertain — customers were abandoning carts because the payment flow didn’t feel secure or professional. For a business selling high-value reconditioned parts, this was directly costing sales.
New and reconditioned parts were muddled. Elise Spares’ competitive advantage is their range of reconditioned parts — professionally rebuilt components at a fraction of new prices. But the old site made no clear distinction between new and reconditioned stock, undermining one of the business’s key selling points.
The approach
Understanding the Lotus community
Lotus owners are enthusiasts. They maintain, modify, and restore their cars with care, and they expect suppliers to share that level of knowledge. I designed the site’s information architecture around how a Lotus owner actually thinks when sourcing parts:
- By model — “I have a Series 2 Elise, what’s available?”
- By component — “I need a brake calliper”
- By condition — “Is this available reconditioned?”
- By part number — “I know the exact part, let me search for it”
Every navigation path leads to the same product, but from different starting points. This multi-path approach means both experienced Lotus mechanics and first-time DIY owners can find what they need.
Separating new and reconditioned
Elise Spares’ reconditioned parts range is a genuine differentiator. I built the catalogue structure to make this distinction clear and prominent — buyers can filter specifically for reconditioned parts, and product pages clearly display condition, warranty information, and the reconditioning process. This transparency builds trust and highlights the value proposition.
OpenCart as the commerce backbone
OpenCart was chosen as it could be installed on the client’s existing shared hosting, keeping costs low by upgrading in place rather than migrating to a new platform. The open-source PHP platform handles payments, inventory tracking, order management, and shipping calculations — all critical for a parts business where accuracy matters. The theme was built entirely custom to suit the specialist nature of the catalogue.
The solution
Product catalogue and navigation
The product catalogue is the engine of the site. Built on OpenCart’s category system with extensive custom filtering, it lets customers approach the catalogue from whichever direction makes sense:
- Model-first browsing — Select your Lotus model to see every compatible part
- Category browsing — Navigate by component type across all models
- Condition filtering — Toggle between new, reconditioned, or view all
- Part number search — Direct lookup for buyers who know the exact part reference
Product detail pages
Each product page is designed to give the buyer complete confidence before adding to cart:
- Compatibility matrix — Clear table showing which Lotus models and years the part fits
- Condition details — For reconditioned parts, a description of the reconditioning process and what’s included
- Multiple product images — High-quality photographs from multiple angles
- Related parts — Complementary components commonly ordered together
- Stock status — Real-time availability with expected restock dates for out-of-stock items
- Fitment notes — Technical details and any special installation requirements
Streamlined checkout
The checkout was redesigned to remove every barrier to purchase:
- Secure payment processing — Trusted payment processing with card and PayPal integration
- Shipping calculator — Accurate rates based on package size and destination
- Order confirmation — Immediate confirmation with tracking information
- Guest checkout — No account required, reducing friction for first-time buyers
Technical implementation
The custom OpenCart theme is built with PHP templates, optimised for performance and SEO on the client’s existing shared hosting:
- Fast page loads — Optimised product images and minimal JavaScript keep the site responsive
- Structured data — Product schema markup helping search engines display rich results for part searches
- Mobile-optimised — Full purchasing experience on mobile, important for mechanics browsing from the garage
- Inventory automation — Low-stock alerts and automated reorder notifications keeping the catalogue accurate
